Shinsegae, formerly part of the Samsung group, separated in the 90s to make its own way. Shinsegae not only runs and operates many department stores throughout the country, it also runs and operates E-mart, Korea’s most popular discount store. It continued to gain strength when in 2006 it purchased all 16 Walmarts in Korea and turned them into E-marts. As a department store, Shinsegae boasts the longest history and tradition in Korea. A total of four shops are open in Seoul alone.
