Seoul Food Tour with Haechi
Episode 7: Daelim-dong's Maneul Chicken Alley
With summers in Korea being so hot and sultry, it's no wonder that having a cold one, indoors or out, is a favorite pastime in Korea. In many cultures, a bowl of peanuts or pretzels will suffice as a snack to munch on while having a beer. But in Korea, the drinking experience is not complete without an order of anju (안주), snacks or light dishes that are meant to be eaten while consuming alcoholic beverages. One of the most popular anju dishes is fried chicken. Although there are several different kinds of fried chicken, the variety that I’ll be introducing to you today is Maneul Chicken (마늘치킨).
Maneul Chicken translates to “garlic chicken”, and is chicken that is either fried or oven-baked and smothered in garlic sauce. There are many fried chicken places in Seoul, but for the best maneul chicken, look no further than Maneul Chicken Alley near Daelim Station. The oldest maneul chicken specialty restaurant in this food alley is City Barbeque Chicken, with over 30 years of business. City Barbeque Chicken shares the alley with only 3 other restaurants, so the alley itself is not very impressive. But with people coming in from all over Seoul for the best maneul chicken in town, this food alley is constantly busy, especially between the hours of 7 – 9 p.m.
The secret to great-tasting maneul chicken is in the garlic sauce. Every restaurant has their own secret recipe, but they all share one thing in common - tons and tons of minced garlic! The chicken is smothered in garlic sauce and left to marinate for a bit to allow for the flavors to sink in.
The crispy outer layer and the soft tender white meat inside go well with the piquant flavor of the garlic sauce. But the garlic sauce doesn't just taste good, it's got some health benefits to it too! Garlic helps prevent heart disease, various cancers and is beneficial to those with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
How Maneul Chicken is Made
Once marinated, the chicken is fried in a deep fryer, one by one.

After the chicken has been cooked golden-brown, it is brushed with generous amounts of garlic sauce, the most important ingredient in maneul chicken. Every maneul chicken restaurant has their own secret recipe for delicious garlic sauce!
