There are many museums that people are not aware of and the Kimchi Field Museum is one of them. To get a better understanding of the meaning of Kimchi to Koreans, a visit to this museum is a must.
The Kimchi Field Museum is located in the COEX Mall, a modern entertainment center popular among the young generation.
Kimchi represents Korean food. The Kimchi Field Museum was built to introduce Kimchi to both Korean people and foreigners, and to showcase the Kimchi culture.
Visitors can appreciate the diverse the types of existing Kimchi from the reproduced samples displayed from each region and season. The displayed samples look so realistic and delicately decorated that it makes visitors want to taste them. Also, the museum displays how to make Kimchi in the Hall of Kimchi Storage using dolls that depict women preparing Kimchi in the old times and surrounding men showing their appetite. Also, the nutritional benefits of Kimchi are illustrated in a section where one can visit and also learn why Kimchi is an excellent food.
The museum also displays a number of traditional paintings of a variety of vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, radish, and red pepper. There also are many pieces of folk paintings from the 19th century of frolicking fish such as carp, mullet, etc. In addition, the pottery section has many different pots and jars used to keep Kimchi, such as Haeju pots, wooden pots, double-sectioned pots, and pots for fermented seafood. One section displays ancient cooking utensils that include Maja(a grater), Baekja-kangpan(white porcelain grater), and traditional sieves.
The Kimchi Field Museum is established to let foreign visitors know why Kimchi is the representative food of Korea, in addition to the various values of Kimchi that go far beyond its delicious taste.
