Seoul’s Folk Asset No.20

#84-1, Pil-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul

Plan with square shaped women’s quarters and perpendicular shaped men’s quarters

Building area: 82.46 square meters

This was the residence of Yi Seung-up, one of Regent Daewon’s chief carpenters. Yi Seung-up was employed in the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace of the 1860’s. The house was recently relocated here from its original site in Samgak-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul and restored.
Originally the outer male servants’ quarters, situated at the main gate, and the inner female servants’ quarters surrounded the ladies’ quarters and the men’s quarters. However, now only the ladies’ and men’s quarters remain standing
The ladies’ quarters are T-shaped and the men’s quarters L-shaped. The roof frame of the kitchen and the main room in the ladies’ quarters is comprised of five main beams to support the eaves. The hall purlins and rafters are arranged in such a manner that the corners of the roof at the front and rear of the house differ in length. The main wood floor room and the room opposite it are framed with five main beams.
